ENTREPRENEUR LI DONGSHENG: FROM ENGINEER TO WORKSHOP FOREMAN, RISING STEP BY STEP TO BECOME CEO OF THE MULTINATIONAL ELECTRONICS CORPORATION TCL

Li Dongsheng’s Journey from an Ordinary Engineer to a Workshop Foreman

From an early age, Li Dongsheng had a strong passion for reading. After being admitted to South China University of Technology, he became even more dedicated to his studies. During this period, he devoted himself to researching radio communication technology. His thoughts were constantly occupied with “analogue electronics” and “radio frequency spectrums.” These interests laid a solid foundation for his future career.

As the leader of the corporation, Li Dongsheng has always focused on one primary mission: effectively managing the business while guiding TCL toward continuous growth and expansion, with the ambition of building an unbeatable global powerhouse.

After graduating from university, Li Dongsheng began his career as a repair technician in a workshop. He was also responsible for inspecting all the machinery in the workshop every day before the end of his shift. Before long, his dedication, professionalism, and strong sense of responsibility earned him recognition from his superiors, leading to his promotion to workshop foreman.

At that time, TTK primarily manufactured cassette tapes. During one of Li Dongsheng’s business trips to Beijing to attend a trade fair, he demonstrated remarkable creativity by decorating the company's exhibition booth with colorful ribbons and lanterns. With just a few simple touches, he transformed TTK's booth into an eye-catching attraction, drawing an increasingly large number of visitors.

Shortly afterward, Li Dongsheng turned his attention to overseas markets. In an effort to secure an order from a major French client, he reportedly drank 30 glasses of alcohol in one sitting and successfully won the contract. From that point onward, TTK's business began to grow rapidly.

However, Li Dongsheng did not rest on his achievements. He continued to actively develop new products and set his sights on the telecommunications market.

Becoming TCL’s CEO and Capturing the Home Appliance Market

At that time, mobile phones were nowhere near as common as they are today. However, Li Dongsheng quickly recognized this untapped market opportunity and proposed that his company enter the mobile phone manufacturing business.

He purchased various mobile phone models available on the market, dismantled them, and carefully studied their internal structures to overcome technical challenges. Just one year later, TCL mobile phones officially entered the market.

Under Li Dongsheng's leadership, TCL achieved remarkable breakthroughs, becoming the world's largest color TV supplier in 2004.

Immediately after launching its products, Li Dongsheng focused on building a strong sales network. Whenever he visited a new city, he would approach five or six distributors to establish partnerships. His distribution strategy included a “try first, pay later” policy, combined with various promotional activities at shopping centers.

Thanks to these effective policies and strategic decisions, TCL mobile phones quickly gained popularity. Within just three years, TCL had become a leading company in China's domestic mobile phone market.

In 1993, entrepreneur Li Dongsheng was officially promoted to General Manager of the multinational electronics corporation TCL. This was also when he began shifting the company's focus toward color televisions, recognizing the enormous potential of the large-screen color TV market.

Before long, color televisions became one of TCL's core product categories.

As market demand continued to grow, distributors flocked to TCL, driving the group's annual revenue to nearly USD 150 million that year. Under Li Dongsheng's leadership, TCL continued to achieve significant milestones, becoming the world's largest color TV supplier in 2004.

In the same year, Li Dongsheng's net worth reached USD 180 million. His name was even featured in the prestigious TIME magazine, further elevating his international reputation.

However, just as he seemed to be approaching the pinnacle of success, Li Dongsheng unexpectedly faced a major setback and one of the most difficult failures of his career.

Rising from the Ashes to Reclaim Glory

In 2005, due to misjudgments of market conditions, both companies acquired by Li Dongsheng – Thomson and Alcatel – suffered substantial losses. Within just 18 months, the accumulated losses reached USD 260 million, marking one of the darkest periods of his life.

At one point, Forbes even described Li Dongsheng as “one of the worst bosses on the planet.”

Despite the overwhelming difficulties, Li Dongsheng refused to give up. After spending seven months slowing down and reflecting on the situation, he decided to start over.

He streamlined the company's business strategy, closed factories in France, and discontinued research into new computer-related business segments to minimize further losses.

At the same time, he initiated an internal restructuring of the company, laying off a significant number of long-serving employees while promoting young, capable talents to key positions.

Finally, Li Dongsheng redirected the company's focus toward technological research and development, making substantial investments in China Star Optoelectronics Technology (CSOT). He subsequently established a 200-member team dedicated to LCD display technology.

These reform measures quickly began to deliver results, helping TCL turn its losses into profits.

In 2014, as the concept of “Internet Plus” gained widespread attention, Li Dongsheng once again recognized the opportunity and actively pursued the company's digital transformation. He introduced dual strategies centered on “Products + Services” and “Smart Technology + Internet” to drive the group's development.

According to TCL Group's annual report, its total revenue reached USD 16 billion in 2017.

Having made an impressive comeback and risen from adversity to become a billionaire, Li Dongsheng once said:

“Throughout my entire life, I have only focused on running a business. That is the one thing I dedicate myself to.”

Ultimately, building wealth is never an easy journey. What matters most is having the determination to never give up or let failure bring you down.
